Meet Our Owner, Percussionist, and his story:
I enjoy music so much. Without music, there is no life.
Sal resides in Destin, Florida and is an accomplished percussionist, band leader, recording artist and entrepreneur with a never-ending passion for music. He exerts energy, creativity, and plays a variety of Latin percussion instruments, including congas, bongos, timbales, and more. With his artistic and exciting hand drumming, you and your guests will definitely be listening and dancing the night away.
Passion for Music
Sal started developing his musical talents while in high school and was inspired by listening to Latin percussionists Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and other famous artists. His passion for music has continued throughout the years. His list of musical credits has grown to include albums, live shows and performances in the United States, Bermuda, Europe, Hawaii and South America.
Aside from music, he is also interested in business and science. As a Senior Computer Scientist with Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in Dayton, Ohio, he directed and managed major global process engineering projects. Sal earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Texas State University, and his Master's degree in Business Administration from Central Michigan University.
Despite his busy schedule, he continues to make time for music. During his personal and business travels, he immerses himself in playing percussion with various Latin and Jazz bands.
Journey to His Music Career
His Journey to His Music Career
Sal’s curiosity for music began when he was playing small Latin instruments e.g. shakers, maracas and the like. Eventually, this led him to listen to Latin, Jazz, and Caribbean music.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was assigned at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C. as a logistician. Sal's professional music career began when he met with members of the Air Force Jazz Band and world famous Airmen of Note Band stationed there and was invited to play Latin percussion for special engagements.
Later, he was assigned at Kindley Air Force Base, Bermuda. During his service, he also learned the Caribbean rhythms from the various island musicians including King Trot, a legendary percussionist. After he had completed his tour, he moved back to Washington, D.C. and entered the information technology field. He continued to serve at several other Air Force bases and then decided to finish his military career after twelve years of honorable service.
During that time, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) had announced open positions for skilled senior-level computer managers. Next, he was hired by DOD at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C. Also, his passion for music never stopped; he continued to perform with several popular Latin and jazz bands in the D.C. area.
Sal enjoyed traveling and wanted to see other parts of the world. Next, he accepted a position as Deputy Chief of Logistics at Bitburg Air Base, Germany in support of the F-4 Phantom and F-15 Eagle fighter aircraft in Europe. During his four-year tour, he also played Latin percussion with the "Triangle" jazz group and the popular "Pete Lancaster" show band. He also traveled to Berlin, Germany and recorded a top-selling classic Sam Cooke single, entitled "Chain Gang" with Pete Lancaster and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra at Hansa Recording Studio.
Sal completed his tour in Germany and moved to San Antonio, Texas and then to Honolulu, Hawaii on a four-year career broadening assignment. While there, he also became a member of a high-energy Brazilian jazz band named "Mistura" featuring Brazil's top pandeiro player, Carlinos Pandeiro De Ouro Olivera and performed regularly at the Hilton Hotel, Wikiki Beach, Honolulu.
After he had completed his tour in Hawaii, he was assigned at the Air Force Logistics Management Center in Montgomery, Alabama. He continued his passion for music and led his own jazz band named "Counterpoint." He also played live start-up acts for the show of "Hiroshima," an American jazz band and the "Kenny G" concert at the Davis Theater in Montgomery, Alabama with saxophonist, Sam Williams and the "Almost Friends" jazz group.
Next, he finished his DOD career and joined the private sector as a Defense Contractor for LOGTEC and Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). He worked from home, and traveled extensively to direct and consult major global process engineering projects.
He also made time to enjoy and play percussion with a dynamic 10-piece Salsa band named "Latin Exposure" from Cincinnati, Ohio. He traveled to Santiago, Chile, and then to Antofagasta, Chile, to perform CSC consulting work for several months. While there, he continued on his musical journey and performed with several talented Salsa bands.
During his off time from CSC, he traveled to Destin, Florida to relax, have fun, and to enjoy the beautiful white sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. He became fascinated with Destin and then decided to make his move with his consulting work and made it his permanent residence. Since then, he's had the good fortune of meeting and working with many amazing musicians in Northwest Florida and has established himself as a popular Latin jazz artist.
In March 2017, Sal won the "Best Latin Artist" Music Award from the Ninth Annual Beachcomber Music Awards held in Destin, Florida. He was humbled and honored to receive this special award and gave credit to the many musicians he leads and performs with for their teamwork and dedication that resulted in this award.
One of Sal's experiences in his music career he values enormously is his opportunity to perform with Ted Shumate, an internationally acclaimed guitarist for three years. Ted has also recorded and produced several jazz albums of his own. His most enjoyable smooth Latin Jazz album entitled "El Toca Del Amor" is a real pleasure to listen to. There's also a photo of Ted on guitar and Sal on Latin percussion shown in the Photo Gallery.
